Technical Midterm

1.  Your camera tells you that 1/125 @ F11 is the correct exposure.  List two other exposures that would allow you to bracket around this reading.   1/125 @ F8 & 1/125 @ F16
2.  Fill in the intermittent apertures.
    F2  F2.8 F4 F5.6 F8 F11 F18 F22  F22

3.  Fill in the intermittent shutter speeds.
   1sec 1/2sec 1/4sec 1/8sec 1/15sec 1/30sec 1/60sec 1/125sec 1/250sec 1/500sec 1/1000sec

4.  F22 would produce a shallower depth of field than F8.  TRUE

5.  While photographing a scene, the camera shows that 1/250 @ F16 will produce a correct exposure.
    Give two equivalent exposures for this reading.  1/500 @ F11 & 1/1000 @ F8

6.  Which shutter speed would best stop a car moving across the frame.
A) 1/1000 sec
B) 1/30 sec
C) 1/4000 sec
D)  1/60 sec

7.  Dodging is the global adjustment that will darken areas of your image. FALSE

8.An ISO rating of 400 is more sensitive to light than 800. FALSE

9.  What is the difference between global and local adjustments?
Global adjustment will be applied toy your entire image, while local adjustments are applied "locally" to the section of the image you select instead.

10.  How many mega pixels you need to make a 8x12 print at 360 ppi?
12

11.  Name two tools in Photoshop you can use to adjust the density (brightness) of your image.
- Dodge Tool
- Adjust levels

12.  Name three tools you can use in Photoshop to change the color of your image.
- Color Replacement Tool
- Hue/Saturation
- Color Balance

13.  What is the best file type to use when emailing or posting pictures to the web? JPEG or PNG

14.  What is the advantage of using adjustment layers?
- it keeps track of the last 50 things you've done in the undo History palette you go can go back and forth when editing your images
- each adjustment layer comes with a built-in layer mask, so you can easily decide which parts of your photo get the adjustment just by painting

15.  What color workspace is best used when editing photographs?
RGB for web. CMYK for printing.

16.  Histogram is a graphic representation of your image and can also be used to judge for correct exposure.

17.  Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the density of your image.
- exposure
- brightness/contrast

18. Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the color of your image.
       - temperature
       - tint

19.  What is exposing to the right and what is its advantage.
Exposing to the right (ETTR) refers to the histogram associated with an image. If you were to expose to the right, you are technically pushing the peak of the histogram as far to the right hand side as possible, i.e. overexpose the image, without clipping any highlights. The resulting file when processed back to the correct exposure, will contain more tonal information and less noise in the shadow areas, maximizing the image quality.

20.  Draw a basic histogram for an underexposed image.

21.  Draw a basic histogram for an overexposed image.

22.  Draw a basic histogram for a correctly exposed image.

23.  What is the best file to use as a layered working file in Photoshop?
PSD/TIFF

24.  Name two advantages of having a larger digital sensor.
- large sensor leads to larger pixels, higher resolution of images.
- it lets you create more background blur

25.  Pixels of unrelated color and/or brightness to surrounding pixels are known as noise.

26.  Name two factors that would cause noise.
- low light condition
- slow shutter speed

27.  In camera raw what is the difference between the Vibrance controls and the Saturation controls.
Saturation is the concentration, intensity of the color, the more saturated the color is, the "purer" it is considered to be, and vice versa. Saturation in camera raw makes every color in hte image more intense, so if something was already intense, it will be more intense. On the other hand, the vibrance control only makes dull colors in the image more vibrant and colorful. In other words, it senses which colors are already vibrant and it affects these less than the dull colors.

28.  Images made of pixels are known as vector based images. FALSE

29.  Name two tools you can use to retouch a photograph.
- clone stamp
- pattern stamp
- healing brush

30.  Name three tools you can use to make a selection.
- lasso tool
- elliptical marquee tool
- quick selection tool

31.  Name two tools in Camera Raw can you use to adjust a particular area of an image.
- spot removal
- adjustment brush

32.  When editing an image what does the term “clipping” mean.  i.e. highlight clipping.
when an image is over or under exposed, its histogram will show a concentration of pixels to the left (underexposed) and to the right (overexposed). When the concentration is bunched up against the edge of the histogram, we know that significant detail has been loss in the image. This loss of detail is referred to as clipping.

33.  Name two advantages to shooting with a raw file.
- when you shoot in RAW you record all of the data from the sensor so it gives you the highest quality files.
- you can easily adjust white balance and get better detail.

34.  What software is best used to get the images from your camera onto your computer?
Adobe Bridge

35.  What is the best way to erase areas in an image?
- layer mask (you can work back and forth with this)
- content aware
- magic eraser tool

36.  Name two controls in Camera Raw used to recover image detail.
- exposure
- contrast
- highlights

Bonus  +1 each

1.What year was the first digital camera produced? 1975

2.What is the temperature scale used to measure color temperature in photography?  Kelvin

3.What president is on the $100 bill? Benjamin Franklin
