For this second creative assignment, I had two concepts in my mind. I wanted to do something related to beauty standards and gender equality. With the media bombarding us with unrealistic beauty standards everyday, it is to no surprise that everyone wants to be perfect. Every girl wants beautiful, fair skin. They want to be skinny and have that tiny waist. When a girl has darker skin, bigger thighs or shorter hair, she is said to not have that beauty standard that people is looking for. I have a friend who vomited up her dinner every night to keep her weight down, and we were just 15 then. The same thing goes to men. If you don’t have that nice body, or if you do not play sports, or if you are not tech savvy, you are not a normal guy. But why? Why can’t you be a guy, who does not watch football, but can cook very well? There are so many commercials claiming to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fight acne. Realistically, you cannot reduce wrinkles because aging is a part of life. You can be thin, you can be fat, you can be healthy, you can have fair skin or you can have dark skin. You can be anything you want, you can do anything you like. Do not let people define your happiness.
Regarding the second concept, I agree that traditional
gender roles are very important indeed and I am not saying that they are bad, but
these traditions vary widely from culture to culture. Arabian women, for
example, do not even have the option to leave the house without a man's
permission. American women are usually dominant nowadays socially. And of course,
nature is indeed intended for women to give birth and to care for their
children, and men to defend and provide for their families. But not all women
are good at cooking and being housewives. And there are definitely men out
there who are very good at being househusbands and loves to cook. So why do most
people still believe boys do not need to learn how to cook and girls do the
housework, all the time? I personally think that each person has a right to
determine their own purpose in life based on their skills, abilities and
interests, and that traditional gender roles rob the business world of some
very talented women, and keep jobs like teaching and nursing from some very
nurturing men. We should be comfortable doing the right things we want in life.
